Permafrost - An issue for the environment and mankind
Whilst the name permafrost implies it should never melt this is exactly what has begun to happen to Siberia's vast area's of permafrost. In 2019, Alexander Kizyakov made the shocking discovery that the Siberian surface permafrost was thawing. In this article we will examine why this melting permafrost is an issue for the environment and subsequently mankind.
In previous articles at Become Carbon Negative we have examined why deforestation inevitably ends in extinction. The deforestation of Siberia is another example of human actions leading to the extinction of the animals inhabiting the area. However the greater issue, posed to the world and everything in it, is the greenhouse gas emissions cased by the melting Siberian permafrost.
It might sound interesting and encouraging for palaeontologists, that dinosaur fossils and Mammoth bones are being released out of this frozen ground but as the frozen ground melts large amounts of dangerous emissions are being released. The emissions we are particularly concerned about are those of Carbon and Methane, with Methane being a far more potent greenhouse gas and one that will lead to rapid global warming.
Even if deforestation activities were to cease completely this would not make sufficient an impact. Only by increasing the quantities of trees being planted can we counteract the damage that has already happened, and is continuing to happen.

So, this is why Become Carbon Negative continue to reiterate the importance of planting trees to not only benefit our atmosphere, but also our whole planet.
The urgency is evidenced by increased signs of global warming and climate change, but by planting trees we have a guaranteed, inexpensive way of cooling the planet and our cities at the same time as creating a nicer more relaxed place to live.
